Calling my first dance concert was a different experience from calling a musical or traditional theatrical production. While I have experience calling shows where cues are often connected to dialogue, music, or specific moments in the script, dance required me to approach cue calling in a completely different way. Instead of relying on spoken text, I had to learn the movement and recognize specific choreography, transitions, formations, and musical moments as my cues. Memorizing dance is also very different from memorizing dialogue because I had to understand the physical language of each piece and anticipate where the dancers would be in their movement. The fast pace of the concert also required me to be especially focused and adaptable. I was constantly balancing lighting, sound, and other technical elements, like gel changes, while watching the stage and anticipating the next cue. This experience challenged me to become more comfortable multitasking and strengthened my ability to stay present and aware throughout a performance. Calling a dance concert was truly a whole different ballgame from calling a musical or theatrical production, but it gave me a new perspective on how a stage manager can communicate and call cues across different types of performances.
